Astana Pro Team riders as Kazakhstan National Team reached their debut victories in 2017 season
The Kazakhstan Team, consisting of 6 Astana riders, won the gold medal of the team time trial at the Asian Road Cycling Championships, in Bahrain, and Astana’s rider Dmitriy Gruzdev also won the gold in the individual time trial.
Gold in the Team Time Trial
The TTT racing circuit was really hard: 6km inside international circuit and 6km outside with a lot of turns and corners. The crucial point was to hold the team working like a clock mechanism with every rider involved on 100%.
“We did a good race,” says Sport Director Alexandr Shefer. “I saw a good level of all riders, especially, Alexey Lutsenko, Dmitriy Gruzdev and Andrey Zeits. I am really happy with the team and our gold medal. It is nice to win this medal for Kazakhstan, but also, it is a good result for Astana Pro Team in the beginning of the season.”
“I’m really happy with our result,” said Alexey Lutsenko. “It’s a big pleasure to win the gold medal for Kazakhstan, for the team as well as for me personally. It is a great honour to represent Kazakhstan in any competition, while to win a medal – that’s amazing!”
Here are the riders of the TTT squad:
- Zhandos Bizhigitov
- Daniil Fominykh
- Dmitriy Gruzdev
- Bakhtiyar Kozhatayev
- Alexey Lutsenko
- Andrey Zeits
Gold in the Individual Time Trial
Dmitriy Gruzdev also gave a strong performance in the individual time trial of 38.4km, showing the best time – 49 minutes and 21 seconds. This result was enough to win the gold medal.
“I didn’t have any reference time on the distance, so I was forced to go with my own feelings pushing a 100%, said Dmitriy Gruzdev. I feel like I did a good race, but I had to wait for all the riders to finish the race. I was a bit nervous about the final result. But my time was the best one, so I am really happy to win and to bring another gold medal to Kazakhstan.”
