And Jakob Fuglsang finishes 6th in GC of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana
Astana Pro Team rider Riccardo Minali took 3rd place at Stage 5 of the Dubai Tour, which has ended last Saturday.
The last stage of the race was held in Dubai city, and the peloton rode 124km in the city center. Astana’s Dmitriy Gruzdev attacked from the peloton almost immediately after the start, breaking away with three other riders. Gruzdev had a very active race, winning one of the intermediate sprints. In the end, the peloton caught Gruzdev’s group with 9km to go.
“It was a good day for us. We were motivated to have an active race,” explained Sports Director Alexandr Shefer. “In such a fast and short stage there were clearly not too many chances for a break to the finish, but we wanted to show ourselves. In the end it was Riccardo Minali who finished 3rd. It’s not a victory, but Riccardo showed his potential. Among some of the best sprinters in the world he did really good. This tells a lot. I believe he has a good chance to become a world-class sprinter in the future.”
Thanks to his podium, Riccardo Minali moved up to a solid 7th place overall in the general classification of the Dubai Tour. He also finished 2nd in the youth classification of the Dubai Tour.
“I am happy with my result, it’s really nice to take a podium spot,” said Riccardo Minali. “My team did a great job during the whole day. In the end Ruslan Tleubayev led me perfectly with 1.5km to go, helping me getting a position for the sprint. I was then able to find a good wheel and I passed well in the final turn. I launched my sprint from Viviani’s wheel and took 3rd place.”
