2010-07-28

70.3 Ironman Antwerp race report

by Bart Aernouts

On sunday 25th of july I took the start in the Ironman 70.3 event of my hometown Antwerp. Since I switched from duathlon to triathlon in 2009, this was my first long distance triathlon event. I prepared well for this race, with a training camp in Tenerife (Spain) and had some podium ambitions for the race as well.

11 o'clock we took the start with about 40 pro athletes, some big names like Marino Vanhoenacker (5 time Ironman champion), Bjorn Andersson (Bike animal), Rutger Beke (Multiple Ironman Champion), Bert Jammaer (2 times winner of Ironman Lanzarote), Dirk Bockel, Frederik Van Lierde, ... . I had a decent 1900 meter swim and lost 2'45 on the first group. As soon as possible on the E-114 bike and chasing the leaders of the race. I was able to bridge the gap on my own and at the 55km mark I got into the chase group with Vanhoenacker, Van Lierde and Bockel. Bjorn Andersson was far too strong on the bike (like many times before) and got into second transition with a 7 minutes lead on our chasing group. Not a bad ride for me with a 2nd bike split of the day (2h05'47 for 90k).

In the beginning of the half marathon run I was chasing Andersson together with Vanhoenacker. After about 10k's I dropped Marino and I was able to catch Andersson at the 14k marker. The last of 3 running laps I tried to enjoy the race a bit, I could lead my first long distance race in my hometown. Never had such a great feeling in a race before!

With a 1h10'56 run split a won the Ironman 70.3 Antwerp triathlon in 3h43.
I'm very excited to win this race in my hometown.
