Compte rendu:
Cancun Ironman 70.3 was always going to be a hot one and with temperatures hitting around 100 degrees F and the humidity at 95% what better way to prepare for Hawaii. Well it actually should make Hawaii feel quite nice or that is the plan anyway.
Race day conditions were gusty on the back end of hurricane Karl, making for a choppy swim a windy ride and with rain later in the day, the extreme conditions seemed even more like an ‘oven on high’.
With the siren sounded the sprint was on with a beach start and within the first few hundred yards I had settled in on Luke McKenzie’s feet. At the completion of the swim 3 of us had separated ourselves from the rest of the field with Richie Cunningham about 30 seconds down.
Into and out of T1 I noticed Richie close behind so it was head down and go for the first 10-15 minutes to ensure the elastic band was broken. Once the pace settled McKenzie and myself were away and it was a matter of steadily building a lead into T2. With both McKenzie and myself using this as a last hit out pre Kona, I knew he was going to be strong all day and he showed his strength out there on the bike. With McKenzie keeping the pace up for the majority of the second half of the bike I was content to settle back and wait for the run.
On return to transition our split to the 2nd group which contained Galindez, Cunningham, Rhodes and White was in the area of 4-4.30 minutes and it was going to be a run race between the ‘two ‘Luke’s’. Knowing the second lap of the run was going to be brutal the game plan was to run the first lap well in control and take it from there. At the completion of the first lap the rain came down and provided a cooler temperature and it was time to pick it up and see if a gap could be opened up over McKenzie. Running a solid middle section as the humidity soared after the rain, and making the final turn with 3 miles to go it was time to control the effort home and enjoy the finish crossing the line in under 4hrs. It was nice to go sub 4hrs as I was informed that only the great Simon Lessing had gone faster.
Things are in good shape and coming together for Kona and it will be great to get back out there.
