Anna Cleaver - Compte rendu de course - St-Anthony's 5150 triathlon 2011
A fun day at the office!
Swim: 1st (swim prime)
Bike: Held 2nd position throughout ride
Finish: 5th place
What a fun race! The prize money in this race ($10k for 1st, $1k for swim/bike/run primes) attracted a seriously hot field consisting of some very good drafting and non drafting athletes.
Swim
Due to choppy conditions the beach swim was changed from a 1500m swim to about a 850m swim. Not great for me as this is where I like to get a gap. The swim was going to be followed by a very long (felt like 1km?) run on concrete to the bikes. As a result of the short swim/ long run, like most other pros I made a last minute decision to not wear the Blueseventy speedsuit. A bit disappointing as I was so excited about trying it. It will be put to good use in 2 weeks time though in my next race! So I took to the start line in my silver Champ Sys race kit.
I had an awesome start and was first in the water by a good margin and held the lead to the first buoy, which makes for a much cleaner swim. I maintained my lead and for the last 300m or so sat in with Sarah McCarty. Unfortunately another athlete made a mistake at the last buoy and headed in the wrong direction. In the process she completely cut me off and made me stop. I looked up and Sarah was about 5m ahead chasing the $1000 swim prime! Head down and off I went sprinting to the beach. I caught her and grabbed the prime before sprinting to my bike on the concrete, increasing my gap. Very happy!
Bike
The bike is flat, fast and windy in parts. It also has some technical turns. I maintained about a 25 second gap behind Sarah Haskins, with 3 or so athletes sitting in with me. The race has a stagger rule as well as a drafting rule. I’m not a fan as I think it encouraged drafting. The Argon18 E-114 was perfect for this course. I sipped on High5 Xtreme on the bike. I think it is perfect for this distance of racing.
Run
The run took us along the waterfront and temperatures were getting hot. The race organisers did such a good job preparing for this with aid stations every mile (there were 4000 competitors and everyone was catered for). I ran through the first 3km very fast. It would be great if I did the last 3km at that speed! I finished in 5th place taking home some good prize money and a great experience.
During the entire run I could hear Siri my coach’s voice in my head. Siri I am sure you know the words that I couldn’t get out of my head as I was trying to keep the cadence up… At one stage I saw someone roller blading and it reminded me to lean forward!
Happy!
I’m stoked with the result and particularly happy with executing the little things well. These things all add up to make a difference.
The triathlon was such a fun well organized event. The local tri club Mad Dogs were great hosts and my homestay Patrick was wonderful. He was amused by me on race morning, first forgetting my keys, my helmet, then my race bag. I gave him a pair of Compressport calves, so maybe he will be seen running the streets of St. Petersberg in them?!
I must thank Louis Garneau for sending me the Vorttice helmet in time for the race (it is seriously a cool helmet!) and Blueseventy for the speedy delivery of the speedsuit. Please see the sponsors tabs on my website to learn more about these great products. I’m quite excited to be going back to LA, a well needed hair and nails day tomorrow with Jenny! I also hear there is a pair of sidi shoes waiting for me in the desert… yay!
Photos to come. And more race reports around the corner as I am planning some back to back racing. Florida 70.3 next! Running with Mickey Mouse at Disney World!
